Shear Nuts: Secure and Tamper-Resistant Fasteners

Shear nuts are a specialized type of nut designed for permanent installation and enhanced security. They consist of a combination of a bowl and a hex nut. When installed, the hexagonal part of the nut shears off at a pre-determined torque, leaving behind a tamper-proof, non-removable cone-shaped section. They are available in either bright zinc-plated steel (EN1A) or stainless steel (304).

Shear nuts are utilized for security purposes; the hexagonal section breaks off when the required torque is applied, leaving only the tamper-resistant cone section, which is virtually impossible to remove.

Shear nuts offer an inexpensive solution to prevent theft and unauthorized relocation of items such as seating. They are installed using standard tooling. When the nut or bolt is fully tightened, the hex drive head is designed to shear off as additional torque is applied. This leaves the shear bolt or the threaded conical lower collar of the shear nut in position on the standard bolt or stud thread, thus making the product permanently fixed.
